Car tyres inflated to their correct tyre pressure can save the motorists up to 10% on their fuel bill. But a survey by TyreSafe reveals many are ignoring this advice.

The survey coincides with the start of Tyre Safety Month; a campaign to highlight the dangers of driving without the correct tyre pressures.

Maintaining the car manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressure can:

1) Increase safety by improving the vehicle’s braking, steering and accelerating performance.

2) Prolongs the life of a car tyre.

3) Save money by reducing fuel consumption. Under inflated tyres have a larger contact patch with the road surface, which increases drag and causes the car engine to work harder.

4) Have a positive environmental impact by reducing the number of tyres that need to be disposed of and reduce harmful gas emissions from the car engine.

The advice is to check air pressures at least once a month and always before a long journey. Motorists should use the manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressure. This can be found in the vehicle’s handbook or on a plate inside the fuel filler flap.

Remember, do not connect your battery and attempt to start the car until you checked the following items for water and humidity, and made sure they’re totally dry: The ECU, the air filter, cabling, spark plugs, battery connections, oil inlet, and all connecting wires around the engine bay. A simple check to these items may save your car from a potential expensive water damage restoration and replacement.

Calculating gas mileage is not just dividing the gas volume by the number of miles traveled. There are a number of variables that affect a vehicle’s gas mileage. Using the pump auto stop will not give you the exact volume of gas in your vehicle. In most cases vehicles take in as much as three gallons of gas after the auto stop has indicated a full tank. This auto stop varies in gas stations. Filling up your gas tank to the fullest is never a great idea either because often overflow costs in loss of gas. You can check your mileage by filling your empty tank up to 10 gallons and then drive around. Ideally you should repeat that a couple of times to calibrate the results.

Last but not the least and the most important factor to consider while calculating mileage is the engine condition. For example if you have just tuned your engine and you want to test the mileage after installing the latest gas-saving equipment, then probably you won’t get accurate results as a better mileage can be attributed to the freshly tuned engine.

So is this a full proof way then towards a better mileage?

The test was conducted on a Isuzu. The truck has a long bed almost 98 inches long. Using a camper shell or a tonneau cover will always give a better mileage than the mini trucks with smaller beds. It is also a pretty light truck. As a result the air drag generated at the tailgate would be far more than that in small, compact trucks. Hence the amount of fuel saved would also be higher in comparison to the small compact one.

If you consider using the tonneau cover, remember that Popular Mechanics had used camper shell molded of plastic that was quite light in weight. Now if you were to use a commercial aluminum (heavy duty), then you would not probably get the same advantage. Alternately using tops made of fiber glass for shorter trucks may improve the aerodynamics better than the lighter plastic covers.

If you are in a flood zone area and are advised to evacuate, do so immediately. If you own a car, you know that the key to fighting these two devils is oil. It lubricates the parts of an engine which minimizes the friction. Without excessive friction, heat is kept to a minimum as well.

Oil is an amazing substance. It can take an absolute thrashing in the harsh environment of an engine and yet still keep friction and heat at bay. After a bit, however, even oil will fail and thus must be changed out.

What answer immediately popped into your mind? I bet it was that the oil should be changed every three months or 3,000 miles, whichever came first. Right? Somewhere, an oil marketing executive has a big grin on their face.

As with many things we know, the 3 and 3 rule is wrong. It is just marketing with no basis in fact. Every car performs differently and does different tasks. This means there is a different guideline for each of them.

Side (blind spot) alerts provide the same hope. These systems help drivers be aware of vehicles in side blind spots when changing lanes and making turns. Sensors integrated into mirrors, taillights and side fascia measure the adjacent lane temperature over time to detect if vehicles are entering the side blind spot. If detected, the system provides visual indications within the mirrors. If this proves ineffective and a turn signal is activated anyway, an audible alert follows. These warnings give drivers more time to react and, hopefully, help avoid the more than 200,000 lane change accidents that occur every year according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It’s amazing how easily they hide those geniuses of technology. We never hear their names, see their faces, or even, in most cases, acknowledge they exist. As individuals we have all been encouraged to make our individual efforts to help the environment, be it by not using countless plastic bags from supermarkets, sorting our rubbish out into separate sacks for safer environmental disposal to leaving our cars in the driveway and getting on our bikes. What are we then to make of the biggest manufacturer of aircraft in the world, Boeing, stating they are expecting official approval of biofuel use in the near future.

A Boeing official is reported as stating “the certification will happen sooner than anyone thinks, “within 3-5 years we will have approval for the commercial use of biofuels”. The official also added that aircraft would not require any modification to operate on a mix of their current fuel kerosene, and biofuel.

Some people might see this mixed fuel proposal as a step forward in curtailing the advance of global warming and being of help to the environment.

Before you think of embracing this new idea lets have a look at some relevant facts, 1) the proposed biofuel needs to be produced, 2) there are 13000 commercial aircraft currently in use.

It is estimated that the ratio of biofuel to kerosene will be 30/70. As the aircraft industry currently uses 85 billion gallons of kerosene per annum, to provide that 30% mix of biofuel from soya beans for example would require the equivalent land mass of Europe being set aside for this purpose.

In fairness to Boeing they are not alone in the aircraft world on this matter. Airbus and British Airways have been conducting trials with Rolls Royce, while Air France-KLM, who are the worlds’ largest airline by revenue, have also given their backing to biofuels.

In contrast to aircraft the motor industry would appear to be making progress in producing cars more friendly to the environment.

The U.S.A. which has traditionally been the home of the big gas-guzzling cars is now turning towards “european” models with more of an emphasis on green credentials and economy.

European and Asian car makers seem to be responding better and quicker to market trends demanding greener and more economical cars.

Without doubt the car industry is experiencing a very difficult time. In the UK from Sept.’07 to Sept.’08 new car registrations fell by 27%. In Sept ‘08 alone Toyotas’ Japanese sales alone fell by nearly 50%. Even in the giant growing economy of China car sales have slumped, which is also the case for France, Germany, Brazil, Mexico and India.

The future, as seen from today’s perspective, in the car industry seems to be focused on two types of car:- the “city” car and the green economical and environmentally friendly car.
